Story line was noticeable throughout, could have been a little stronger in that area. This review is based on demo only, but I couldn't wait for the demo to finish so that I could buy it. However, a few puzzles are poorly-designed there was one I literally couldn't Lost Lands: The Wanderer, even when I knew I was doing it correctly, because the controls didn't match the game action and the developers relied way too much on the "fit the shape into the lock" solution, as so many do. But Haunted Hotel is one of the few that, IMHO, has been consistent in putting out fresh ideas for plots and gameplay. It's part of the Haunted Hotel series, but it is quite different from the others. Okay, so at least for me the gameplay seemed rather easy at times and perhaps a bit predictable but nevertheless, I found Room 18 to be such a wonderful game for Halloween and so enjoyable. I am a happy camper now that I have my wonderful Elephant Games back where they need to be An excellent story inside gritty graphics and good ambient sound. There were several of the storybook type scenes and I did find some of the required items difficult to locate. But in Haunted Hotel: Phoenix, it's the story, the Collectorx mystery and our part in it, that all make this game great. Although they are decent puzzles, they do tend to be fairly easy to solve, and Edifion are Battle Slots "clicking one may affect others" which are my personal nemesis. The boys soon find out that Room 18 has roots that intertwine deeply into their family's past, discovering how and why is the easy part, escaping Room 18 is a whole different ballgame! I remember when the first Haunted Hotel games were released and this game definitely reminds me of what originally made this one of my favorite series. Infact the graphics were excellent! Full HOP scenes. Amanda Sate worked with Steven at the University, and her affection for Steven was her inspiration for renovating the main University building into a Hotel, to be closer to Steven. I did the easiest difficulty since sometimes I'm blind to the obvious and it was a blessing at times to have the quick hints, but in hindsight it wasn't difficult. The twists and turns taken to find clues, and the surprise and cleverly adapted tools you'll use to do so, make this game far from the usual dull formula some HOGs use.
For those reasons and the bonus chapter, I am buying the CE version. You don't just ramble around inside the hotel rooms. I enjoyed the extra puzzles to be solved; morphing, fear pics, and phobias. Haunted Hotel: Phoenix takes some big shifts but, mostly you're always moving forward without too much back and forth. There are several levels of play and you can chose which you like. Okay, so the Morphing Objects are the Elephant in the room, literally, they are the size of a baby Elephant, but I am so happy to see that these guys are slowly returning to their roots.
