At a time when there are few high caliber products coming out, especially in the HO game market where everything is so run of the mill, "Spirits of Mystery: Whisper of the Past," is Arxon breath of fresh air. I think the reason so many games are now considered cookie cutters is that the puzzles replace the creativity of storyline and HOS. Some of the more complex puzzles are available in a Casual or Hard Mode of difficulty, but for the most part, they are solvable on the first attempt. Honestly, if the story is lacking in context for some reason, and I hope not, I know the visual quality will be enough for me to enjoy it. Want to move forward — play a puzzle; need a tool — play a puzzle, and the list goes on, and on, and on. The scene designs remain pretty basic, but with enough interesting details to keep me captivated. A disappointment for me is that the game did not have as many HOPS as I would like but the ones that were in the game were excellent. The magical lens gadget that AMAX Interactive keeps including in these Spirits of Mystery games is still a dull and lazy idea, an unnecessary distraction. The soundtrack with the baying wolves is one from the Shadow Wolf series but developers do reuse the tools they have! The hefty backstory makes for an engaging premise for the game and the ubiquity of action sequences certainly helps. I have only deducted one star because the game had too many puzzles. Gameplay is not difficult and is a nice interlude between grey-matter heavy more intense games. I do enjoy puzzles but when they become the game that is where I begin to lose my interest. There are no Morphing Objects as far as collecting them, but a few of the HOS's had several Morphing Objects that had to be clicked on when it was in the correct form. A non-magical Scythe or Sickle would have tackled the weeds just as easily and never needs to be recharged, but I'm sure they would require gloves, a new handle, oil to remove the rust and a whetstone to sharpen them, right? The gameplay is void of any slight hint of challenge, the hidden object scenes are mundane, and the puzzles are uninspired.

The CE Bonus Chapter is riddled with them as well. For me the game was quite enjoyable and I recommend that you try the demo. I guess the reaper had an extra. There aren't a lot of Hidden Object Scenes in either the main or the CE bonus chapter, this is definitely a puzzle-heavy game. I'm recommending this for those of you that enjoy simple minis and few hogs. And another thing I have only deducted one star because the game had too many puzzles.
